President Obama speaks to tv show host David Letterman. Letterman makes a joke to Obama saying something to the empty chair next to him. Letterman asked Obama how he felt at the convention. Obama says he felt great about it although people say Michelle is better at speaking then Obama is. Letterman then asks Obama what the clock was at the Republican convention was and Obama says that was the trillion dollar deficit. There was a surplus of money when Clinton was president but because of 2 wars and a recession, the money was lost and money was borrowed from the citizens to pay off the wars and help the economy. The republicans views are to not increase taxes or decrease taxes for anyone while the democrats views are to increase tax on the wealthy a little more. Obama states that regular people do not see the gridlock in Washington but see what is happening to them personally and in their community. He believes that the american people are more thoughtful, decent, and have more common sense than the people in Washington D.C. He wants to focus on things that are good for the american people and not just politics. Letterman asks Obama if he feels responsible for the loss of jobs. Obama states he does feel responsible because he is president but for the past 30 months, there has been an increase of 4.5 million jobs in the US but there is still a long way to go since we lost 9 million jobs in the recession. He plans to give tax breaks to companies in the US and not overseas, create better education systems, expand energy including alternative energy, and reduce the deficit in a sensible way.
